Which Dog Crate Should You Buy?
We frequently receive questions asking for advice on which dog crate to choose. These questions usually revolve around one of the following concerns:
- Which dog crate is suitable for my dog?
- Which dog crate is suitable for my car?
- Does your dog only need to lie down for a short journey, or do they need more space?
- How much of the boot – and potentially the back seat – are you willing to use?
1) WHICH DOG CRATE IS SUITABLE FOR MY DOG?
Most dogs actually travel best when they don't have too much room to move around. However, it should also be noted that no two dogs are the same, and their personalities can vary as much as humans do. That’s why YOU are the best person to choose the right dog crate for your dog. It can be difficult to give a definitive answer to which dog crate is right for your dog, but here's a small trick to help you find the one that fits best:
Simply create a small sketch – for example, on the floor. Take the measurements from one of our dog crates and mark the four corners – perhaps with four books – and let your dog lie inside to see if there is enough space. If not, move up a size and measure the next crate.

2) WHICH DOG CRATE IS SUITABLE FOR MY CAR?
We often get questions like: Which crate fits a Mercedes estate car? Or a VW Up? In 2013, 254 different car models were sold, and boot measurements are often only given in litres – not physical dimensions. Besides the fact that we're not car specialists, we also don't know the following:
- Do you need space for other items in the car?
- Can the back seat fold down?
- How large is the car?
- How large is your dog?
- Should the crate be permanently installed in the car?
The best advice we can give is to grab a tape measure and measure the boot. It only takes 2 minutes.
When measuring, here are a few tips:
- Remember to measure from the top part of the back seat. The back seat is often angled. Some crates have a 90-degree angle at the back, so they won’t fit all the way into the boot.
- Remember that some crates at the front are angled to fit most tailgates. But not all of them.
- Be aware that the boot in some cars is narrower above the rear wheel arch.
